"Amsterdam schreeuwt om cultuur" - Campaigning to save Dutch culture
15.11.2010Next Saturday afternoon, November 20, the people of Amsterdam will be making themselves heard in response to proposed cuts in government funding of the arts: “Amsterdam is crying out for culture”. We are calling on you to participate in this public event, because the voice of the audience is important. Your presence at this demonstration will be the living proof to politicians of just how vital cultural subsidies are.
We will be setting off from the Beursplein at 14.30 (see ‘Programme’ below) to join the main event at the Leidseplein at 16.00, in which the necessity for culture wil take centre stage. On the balcony of the theatre, well-known and lesser-known Dutch personalities will be giving one-minute statements to show how important culture is in their lives. These will include such fans of culture as Sylvia Tóth, Maria Goos, Ivo Niehe, Theo Nijland, Roeland Fernhout, Hadewych Minis, Corrie van Binsbergen, Rick de Leeuw, Cornald Maas and 100% Isis. This will be followed by a short performance by the Nederlands Kamerkoor and the wind section of the Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest.
Programme
• 14.00 hrs: Do join us on the Beursplein: members of the public, Nederlands Kamerkoor, Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, Nederlands Kamerorkest and employees of other cultural institutions.
• 14.30 hrs: Departure of the procession to the Leidseplein (with music and banners)
• 16.00 hrs: Les by ‘ringmaster’ Ivo Niehe, a cross section of Amsterdam’s rich cultural life is represented by means of one-minute statements.
• Musical performances of Nederlands Kamerkoor and Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest.
