De wereld draait door (The World keeps turning) – view our contribution

14.02.2011

On Friday 11 February the Nederlands Kamerkoor was once again a guest on De Wereld Draait Door, presented by Matthijs van Nieuwkerk. We sang a one-minute opera with the revolution in Egypt as its subject. The brand-new libretto is by Hafid Bouazza and the music was composed by Bob Zimmerman in the course of the night of February 10th.

During that day it had been announced that President Mubarak would make a speech in the evening. Many people expected him to say that he was resigning from office, but in the end he did not do that. The editorial staff of DWDD nonetheless decided to devote the mini-opera planned for that day’s broadcast to Egypt. And then finally it happened: after several weeks of protest by the Egyptian people on the now world-famous Tahrir Square, President Mubarak resigned from office a few hours before this edition of DWDD. When this news was announced, Bouazza and Zimmerman rushed to change the ending of the opera. Few operas have ever been this topical.

The main protagonists in this opera are President Mubarak and the Egyptian people. You can see and hear Frans Fieselier as the now ex-president, and the Nederlands Kamerkoor, which is split into two small choirs, representing the supporters and opponents of Mubarak.
