Directeur NKK neemt afscheid en ontvangt Koninklijke onderscheiding

General manager bids NKK farewell and receives royal honour

08.06.2010

On Monday 7 June Leo Samama bade farewell as general manager of the Nederlands Kamerkoor. On this occasion Hans van der Sluijs, mayor of Leidschendam-Voorburg, presented Samama with a royal honour. He has been appointed Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau.

Leo Samama (1951) has over the course of more than 30 years come to occupy an exceptional position in the Dutch classical music scene. Throughout these years he has engaged intensively and broad-rangingly in virtually all aspects of classical music: in the areas of education, excellence, management, promotion of new music, preservation of existing music, audience-building, development and nurture of talent, music history and theory, programming et cetera. The development and improvement of Dutch musical life in was his first priority throughout. His efforts have served both the collective and the individual, and have always been in the name of a greater good: keeping classical music alive in The Netherlands.

Samama has been involved with the Nederlands Kamerkoor since 2003, first as Artistic Director and since 2004 as General Manager, a role in which he has combined the artistic and business management of the choir.  Samama has managed to strengthen the artistic position of the NKK by pursuing a policy of innovation and the development of international contacts and diverse collaborations. On the business front he ensured, among other things, that the choir was spared a very drastic reduction in subsidy. After seven years with the Kamerkoor, he now wishes to devote himself wholeheartedly to writing books and music.  In addition he will continue to play an advisory role within the music sector.

The Nederlands Kamerkoor greatly appreciates the way in which Leo has led the organisation with commitment and enthusiasm. We shall miss him!
