El sol del sur

What a treat it was to work with Peter Dijkstra again for a couple of weeks! And with such a fantastic programme: Poulenc, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Villa-Lobos, Pizzetti en Kleppe, with “Debussy forming a radiant arch over the concert as a whole,” as the Friesch Dagblad newspaper remarked.
Each piece had its own strength, each piece its dazzling beauty, each piece in turn managed to warm the hearts of the audience. In the Romanceros by Castelnuovo-Tedesco Izhar Elias was the guitar soloist, and in Villa-Lobos soprano Heleen Koele sang the famous melody with refinement and passion in equal measure.
And then there was the new cycle by Joost Kleppe: who could have imagined that a new work, with the ink still wet, would earn such enthusiastic applause, even as early as after the third of five sections! Masterly music, which at very least deserved some attention from the Dutch press. A serious omission!
And finally Francis Poulenc, who ‘rubbed shoulders’ with Claude Debussy: both composers’ music brilliant and intense, and the singers ‘on wings of song’, inspired by Peter Dijkstra.
