Lassus met Paul Van Nevel

Lassus project with Paul Van Nevel

08.12.2009

Now that Paul Van Nevel has headed home and the Nederlands Kamerkoor is already tackling the next project, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, it’s a good moment to take a backward glance. ‘Heavenly sounds from Lassus with Kamerkoor’ was the NRC Handelsblad’s headline, and the review in the Leeuwarder Courant was entitled: ‘Kamerkoor with Van Nevel unbeatable.’

And that’s just how it was. A series of seven concerts, almost all very well-attended, by audiences who were in raptures after hearing so much vocal splendour and so many startlingly beautiful compositions, in fact an exquisite ‘musical catalogue’ of the work of Orlande De Lassus. The Friesch Dagblad wrote enthusiastically about the concert in the Grote Kerk in Leeuwarden, which was also broadcast live on Radio 4: ‘At the very first entry the audience became as quiet as a mouse. [...] The moments at which sadness and melancholy were conveyed infinitely softly and sensitively were poignantly beautiful. [...] You seldom hear such singing. Sometimes during a final chord you could imagine you were listening to a wind quartet. [...]
The NRC Handelsblad’s reviewer heard the concert in the Der Aa-Kerk in Groningen and observed: ‘Yesterday’s concert had something of a séance about it: the choir stood in a small circle with their backs to the audience. This arrangement reinforced the introverted character of the music.’
This unique experience will be followed next season by a programme of the finest music from Henegouwen! We will keep you informed.
