Rachmaninov – Vespers
Nederlands Kamerkoor
Risto Joost, conductor
Listening to the Rachmaninov Vespers, you can hardly believe that the composer was not at all religious. This work possesses an enormous spiritual expressiveness that is easily understood by people from both Eastern and Western Europe: these Vespers, capable of moving you to tears, rank among the most popular works of a cappella choral music. And no wonder: the thousand-year-old Russian melodies on which Rachmaninov based them, mixed with his mastery as a composer, make up a powerful magic potion. Conductor Risto Joost, born in Estonia while it was still under Soviet rule, is also fascinated by the piece. Together with the singers of the NKK, he will be going in search of the essence of Rachmaninov’s Vespers, and of the characteristic sound that the NKK can lend this masterly work.

Jan Willem de Vriend Conductor
‘Jauchzet, frohlocket, auf, preiset die Tage:’ the tried and tested combination of the NKK and Combattimento Consort Amsterdam is guaranteed to provide you with a terrific prelude to the Christmas season. In his 6-part Christmas Oratorio Bach tells his evocative Christmas story: from the angel who announces to Mary the birth of Christ, to the treacherous Herod, who by means of a trick tries to have Joseph’s family arrested. The charming instrumental Pastorale (Sinfonia) tells us that the shepherds are on the way to visit the Baby Jesus, and in the moving alto aria ‘Schließe, mein Herze’ we can even share in the young mother’s most intimate emotion: Mary’s wonderment at the great good fortune she has experienced – human and recognizable.

Schein – Israelis Brünnlein
Nederlands Kamerkoor
Concerto Palatino, L’Armonia Sonora
Siebe Henstra organ
Fred Jacobs lute
Robert Franenberg violone
Jos van Veldhoven conductor
Just listening to Johann Schein’s Israelis Brünnlein, you might get the sneaking feeling that it is the work of an Italian composer. Monteverdi perhaps? And that’s not such a strange idea: Schein, a predecessor of Bach as cantor at St. Thomas’s church in Leipzig and a contemporary of Monteverdi, inspired by the developments in Italy, set German texts to music. ‘In a characteristically graceful Italian, madrigalesque manner,’ as he himself wrote on the title page. What kind of texts were these? Coming mainly from the Old Testament, they were described by Schein as ‘Power Proverbs’, cogent sayings from which one could draw consolation or encouragement.
Conducted by Jos van Veldhoven, Schein’s work will be performed with colourful variety, ranging from a single voice with simple continuo accompaniment to a five-part choir accompanied by a gamba consort, a wind quintet and an extensive continuo section.
