Travel with the Nederlands Kamerkoor
04.01.2012In the spring of 2012 the Nederlands Kamerkoor, together with Le Concert Lorrain and conductor Christoph Prégardien, will embark on a European tour of Bach’s St John Passion. An interesting package deal has been put together to incorporate the concert in Antwerp on Thursday 22 March 2012, plus a city walking tour and a museum visit, based around the theme of the St John Passion. A ticket for the concert is, of course, also included. If you would like to take this trip, book soon, since the number of places is limited.
A central element of the package is a walking tour of the city under the guidance of Dr Piet Leupen, emeritus professor of Medieval History. The St John Passion by J.S. Bach tells the story of Jesus’ suffering and crucifixion, as recountd by his disciple John. This version of the story was particularly loved by the faithful, because it was most in keeping with popular devotion.
In Antwerp we come across Jesus’ favourite disciple everywhere, in paintings, sculptures and wood carvings. He is always standing close to Mary, the city’s patron saint, at the foot of the cross. One highlight is P.P.Rubens’ Descent from the Cross in the beautiful Onze-Lieve-Vrouw Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in the Low Countries. Due to the restoration of the Museum of Fine Arts, there is temporarily the special treat of being able to admire Rubens’ works in their original location.
With the aid of works of art and special locations in Antwerp, Piet Leupen will recount and enable us to visualize the story of the St John Passion. On the evening of the concert you will dine in the Grand Café of De Singel, the concert hall where the NKK is performing. Finally, the concert will be followed by a meet & greet with the singers. The following day is yours to fill in as you wish.
