Collaboration with Spui25 – Faith in Music
18.02.2011The Nederlands Kamerkoor and academic/cultural centre Spui25 are together organizing an event under the title “Faith in Music”, as a special introduction to our “Tehilim” concert, which is taking place on 12 March 2011 in the synagogue of the Liberal Jewish Community of Amsterdam. Conductor Klaas Stok and singer/soloist Gilad Nezer will speak on the subject of music and singing; Prof. G.Rouwhorst (University of Tilburg) and Prof.R.de Groot (University of Amsterdam) will talk about Jewish and Christian liturgy and music. Admission is free, but it is necessary to reserve.
On 12 March at 20.15, in the new synagogue of the LJG, the Nederlands Kamerkoor is singing a programme of psalms from both the Jewish and Christian traditions. The liturgy as it was performed in Jewish temples was one of the most significant sources for the later hymns of the Church of Rome. Songs of praise, psalms (‘Tehilim’), have for centuries been an established element of both Jewish and Christian cultures, each of which underwent its own development, both liturgical and musical. Prof. Gerard Rouwhorst (Theology) and Prof. Rokus de Groot (Musicology) will discuss this historical interweaving of liturgy and music.
Music is a powerful medium for conveying a religious message, but even if you’re not religious, you can still believe in the power of music. How do you as a musician deal with religious music when, for instance, you sing it in the pre-eminently religious surroundings such as a church, or in the secular context of a concert hall? Or if you’re not a believer yourself, or have grown up in a different faith? Gilad Nezer is the “chazzan” of the Liberal Jewish Community of Amsterdam. How does he manage to combine his job with the NKK with the one at the synagogue? Conductor Klaas Stok and singer Gilad Nezer will discuss the ‘Tehilim’ programme and its performance.
The spoken language is Dutch.
