“Tasteful double portrait Schütz and Distler”
09.10.2008
Under this headline De Telegraaf reviewed the programme of works by Schütz and Distler with which the Nederlands Kamerkoor is touring the country this week. The first concert, in the packed Lutherse Kerk in The Hague - the opening concert of the city’s Internationaal Schütz Festival - was an immediate success.
The wonderful compositions for mutiple choirs by the aging 17th-century German master contrasted with the more rigorous motets of his younger 20th-century colleague: “Music which goes straight to the heart”, as the NRC wrote.
“Klaas Stok approached both Schütz and Distler with a sympathetic naturalness.
Phrases were given ample room, the polyphony remained clear, and any thirst for effect was avoided as much as possible”, according to the NRC, which went on to express its support for the choir, whose existence is being threatened by the unsupported judgment of it by the Dutch Fund for the Performing Arts+.
