Grieg – humanist in hart en nieren
04.01.2008Grieg - humanist in heart and soul. As conductor of the Oslo Chamber Choir and the Norwegian Soloists’ Choir, Grete Pedersen has made a widespread impact. So it was high time she made her debut with the NKK, and with a programme based around Edvard Grieg.
Central to this programme is Grieg’s humanism and perception of Nature as expressed in his four renowned late Psalms, opus 74, from 1906. Around these works Pedersen has placed several more recent compositions in a similar vein, among which are two ‘night pieces’, one by the Franco-Greek composer Yannis Xenakis and the other by the Franco- Finnish Kaija Saariaho.
Extracts from Grieg’s diaries:
“The problem that has been raised by the Dreyfus affair is an eternally human one: who has the greater right – the power of the physical or of the intellectual? A person is not given any sentence upon conviction without the court’s having been aware of all the reasons behind that sentence. ‘Raison d’état’ may never be more important than an individual’s innocence.”
“The desire to be absorbed into Nature. Everything is the same desire, the same longing, that lies at the heart of all music – at least, for those who know how to listen.”
“The ability to withdraw into yourself and to forget everything around you when you’re engaged in the creative process – that alone, I believe, is what is necessary to create something beautiful. It is all a total mystery.”
