Review: "Delightfully rolling, flowing lines"

03.12.2010

The PZC (Nov 29) reports: “Paul Van Nevel regards the music of Flemish Renaissance composers as sheer poetry. The pure sounds evoke memories of times gone by. As 20th-century people, we can scarcely imagine what life was like in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. [...] Composers may indicate in their scores how their music should be interpreted, but those scores will never reveal their real secrets. What is behind those notes, what rhythm, what tempo is appropriate? Questions give rise to more questions and will never be answered precisely. The sleuth Van Nevel remains fascinated as ever by these scores and has been conducting polyphonic works with his Huelgas Ensemble and with the Nederlands Kamerkoor for more than forty years now.”

In Vlissingen, this top ensemble was led by a true musician. The St Jacobskerk, with its somewhat dry acoustics, was the ideal location for this music.” [...] “The arrangement of the singers in a circle was interesting and effective. It was this positioning that made the melodic lines flow together so well. The attentively listening singers were at the same time producing the right vibrations and emotions. The audience paid breathless attention to this rich music, so full of nuances. So finely executed, that last trill on the final note, so subtle the accompanying humming in the rondo of Horlay, so wonderful that flawless intonation in the Sanctus of Binchois. The Lamentatio by De Orto was impressive, with a sublime interpretation of the first words (such as Aleph and Beth). Those undulating, flowing legato lines were delightful, just heavenly music. [...] A performance of sheer class. “

“At the court of François de Valois, king of the French, it must have been quite a game: shuffling around in stockinged feet, burning with desire, weeping at sweet memories. This is at least the impression left by the wonderful programme with which conductor Paul Van Nevel and the Nederlands Kamerkoor are touring the country. On offer are 16th-century motets and a mass - material rarely found in everyday concert programmes.”

“Finally, here is a recording of Bach’s motets (sung at sensible tempos) that employs a moderately-sized choir (two dozen voices—no “one-to-a-part” stuff here!), a simple basso continuo (organ and cello), and doesn’t get hung up on the “did he or didn’t he” nonsense regarding BWV 230 (Lobet den Herrn), rightly including it among the “standard six” works Bach composed in this rather vaguely defined genre.”
