[...] “During the opening concert of the Tijdgenoten (Contemporaries) series, ondes martenot-specialist Valerie Hartmann-Claverie placed a delicate halo of whistling tones around the women’s voices of the Nederlands Kamerkoor. At other moments she struck terror into the Asko-Schönberg Ensemble with the siren-like whining of a fairground attraction.
And thus the paradox of Messiaen’s art shone in all its glory. On the one hand heavenly, disembodied female voices, or resolute sprechgesang. On the other hand jubilant song tasting of a sugar-coated communion wafer. More gripping still was the imaginative power exuded by Cinq rechants, with attractive sound effects of bubbling and panting from the men, and choir voices which fluttered down like a colourful cloud of confetti.”
