Modern Medieval music - Friesch Dagblad 19 October

24.10.2007

“Recited sung texts, choral speaking, wispy transparent curtains of sound plus occasional synthesizer-produced sounds filled the Roman Catholic church in Heerenveen yesterday evening. These sounds belonged to the programme presented there by the Nederlands Kamerkoor during the opening concert of the Northern Choral Festival.“

[...] “The singers of the Nederlands Kamerkoor and the musicians of the Nieuw Ensemble gave a most gripping and impressive account of this work.” [Lamento Pacis]
“No less impressive was the a cappella performance of The Birth of Music. In this piece Ton De Leeuw creates a fantastic depiction of the development from chaos to flowing melody.
His works were alternated with three by Stravinsky. The men of the choir, accompanied by a few instruments, opened the concert with the Introitus from his Requiem, which was followed by a short a cappella choral work. The last piece on the programme was his Cantata, based on 15th- and 16th- century English song texts. The work, composed for women’s choir, interspersed with several nicely sung soli by mezzo soprano Karin van der Poel and tenor Albert van Ommen, plus some wind instruments, was sober in character. An exciting end to an excellent concert of medieval music in a 20th-century style.”
