Review: Nézets st. Matthew's Passion

“The audience in the Doelen concert hall on Wednesday evening responded to the performance of the St. Matthew Passion with a small standing ovation, which was directed at all the performers, but above all at their young conductor. And no wonder, in the face of such an overwhelming outpouring of musicality.
Yannick’s approach to Bach’s masterpiece is not based on any hankering after authenticity. His basic principle is: ‘ I’ll show you what I want, you put that into music’. And the music sounded masterful. The performance exuded an atmosphere of restrained expressivity, with sharply defined accents.
With beautiful singing from the Nederlands Kamerkoor. And with a Rotterdam Philharmonic in top form.” […]
