Brüggen presents Lacrimosa as lilting Viennese waltz

In the early parts of Mozart’s Requiem the hall proved not always conducive to good balance between the orchestra and the Nederlands Kamerkoor. The low brass sections in particular regularly drowned out the strings, which then appeared unable to keep from returning the compliment by playing more loudly.
Brüggen took tempi which were energetic and agile. In the Rex tremendae he got the choir to enunciate the chanted ‘Rex!’ clearly and he presented the Lacrimosa as a lilting Viennese waltz. Among the soloists soprano Susan Gritton made a particular impression with her warm and bright tone, and Marcel Reijans’ vigorous tenor voice shone down like a bright star on Mozart’s swan song.
