“Monumental performance of Haydn’s ‘Last words on the cross”

Haydn and Mendelssohn with the Orchestra of the 18th Century
Review by Christo Lelie, Trouw, 1 September 2009

“[…] The stage in the Church of St. Augustine was barely large enough to accommodate the sizeable Orchestra of the 18th Century and the choir. The sound they produced in the church acoustics, so appropriate to this sort of music, was impressive. […] Brüggen chose a grand approach to the work but also often illuminated its gentle side. The Nederlands Kamerkoor, standing in a semi-circle, sang with power and homogeneity, though not always with the perfection one expects. […]”

Haydn in Rhoon

Schakel Albrandswaard van 17 september 2009

“On Saturday evening in the village church in Rhoon an exuberant audience brimming with enthusiasm rewarded Die Kölner Akademie and the Nederlands Kamerkoor with a standing ovation lasting several minutes. And rightly so. The performance of Haydn’s Symphony No. 49 and his Stabat Mater as well as that of the Litaniae Laurentanae KV 109 by W.A.Mozart were of an extremely high and pleasant quality. […] The listeners in the church were witness to a sublime performance by the Akademie and the Kamerkoor, conducted by the American Michael Willens, who endowed the music with profound expression.
The choir has at its disposal splendid voices, which ensure not only a splendid choral sound, but also outstanding solo contributions. The high quality of the Akademie forms the perfect complement to this.”
