Troostende madrigalen
Fri 20.01.2012 — 19:30 hrs
Waalse Kerk in Amsterdam
Comforting Madrigals - Just listening to Johann Schein’s Israelis Brünnlein, you might get the sneaking feeling that it is the work of an Italian composer. Monteverdi perhaps? And that’s not such a strange idea: Schein, a predecessor of Bach as cantor at St. Thomas’s Church in Leipzig and a contemporary of Monteverdi, set German texts to music, ‘in a characteristically graceful Italian, madrigalesque manner,’ as he himself wrote on the title page. By means of the new method of composing, he introduced the vocale concertante style, with German text above a basso continuo.
Under the inspiring direction of Jos van Veldhoven, the Nederlands Kamerkoor will perform Schein’s work with a great variety of colours and textures, ranging from a single voice with simple continuo accompaniment to a five-part choir accompanied by a gamba consort, a wind quintet and an extensive continuo section.
