Muzikale rebellen
Sat 26.05.2012 — 20:15 hrs
Musis Sacrum in Arnhem
Choral music by two musical rebels: Carlo Gesualdo and Igor Stravinsky were men of character who did not shy away from controversy. Stravinsky was very intrigued by Gesualdo and made arrangements of his music.
Naples, around 1590. Prince Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa murders his adulterous wife and her lover, whom he has caught in flagrante delicto. This fiery man, who will later become racked with remorse, for now seeks oblivion in a riotous life, only then to beg God for forgiveness again. His music, full of astonishing and intriguing harmonic twists and turns, often emotionally highly charged, was way ahead of its time.
Paris, around 1910. Igor Stravinsky, an unknown young composer from St. Petersburg, becomes famous at a stroke with the ballets he composes for the Ballets Russes of Diaghilev. He bewilders and fascinates with the new musical language he employs and with the daring subjects of his works. Later Stravinsky became fascinated with Gesualdo’s music, and in the 1950s even paid two visits to his former palazzo in Naples. He instrumented a number of Gesualdo’s works and completed various fragments.
Risto Joost conducts the Nederlands Kamerkoor in some of these arrangements, as well as in other works by both these musical rebels.
