Waalse Kerk in AmsterdamJos van Veldhoven — Comforting Madrigals - Just listening to Johann Schein’s Israelis Brünnlein, you might get the sneaking feeling that it is the work of an Italian composer. Monteverdi perhaps? And that’s not such a strange idea: Schein, a predecessor of Bach as cantor at St. Thomas’s Church in Leipzig and a contemporary of Monteverdi, set German texts to music, ‘in a characteristically graceful Italian, madrigalesque manner,’ as he himself wrote on the title page. By means of the new method of composing, he introduced the vocale concertante style, with German text above a basso continuo.
